Story (S)heroes engages girls, trans and non-binary youth to explore their identity and community through reading, writing, art and storytelling. The program was designed in collaboration with the Kitchener Public Library. Story (S)heroes builds literacy enthusiasm and skills through shared reading of carefully curated books that talk about youth identity, promote positive self-esteem, and explore issues important to girls, as well as through guest speakers and writing activities.
Each week the group would work on designing and executing a zine full of their art and written ideas. To close out each session of the program, we held a zine book launch party and graduation with family and friends invited, and copies of their zine would be distributed in little libraries across Waterloo Region. A network of little library owners acted as stewards for the zine, helping to promote and share it with those in their neighbourhood. In 2019, this program won a provincial award from the Ontario Library Association for excellence in children’s or teens services.
