Maker Expo highlights markers through offering booths, demonstrations and exhibits, as well as facilitated ‘maker activities.’ For this arts-based community building project we used spray painted plexiglass walls and wheat paste to create our own collaborative wheat paste street art mural. Participants were educated on the ancient art of wheat paste, how to make it and best practices for its application. Participants practiced by wheat pasting their artistic creations onto the boards.
On one board we prompted people to draw out what they most love to make. On another board the prompt was to share a doodle that reflects how they felt about their time at the Marker Expo. The last board was a ‘rebel zone,’ where participants could paste anything they wish, from art to cryptic notes and words of wisdom. Participants were also given a take-away package with a wheat paste recipe and some mixed media paper to try at home.
